The uniform, the four stripes, the view from the flight deck: pilot life looks glamorous from the outside. But what are we not seeing behind the uniform? In the Dr. M.G.R. Aviation Podcast, Captain Dhanasekar talks with our students about the side of flying that rarely makes it onto social media.
Part 8: the lifestyle behind every flight
Being a pilot is about much more than flying and travelling. The episode looks at the responsibilities that come with the job and the adjustments a pilot's personal life has to make:
- Responsibility: every flight carries passengers, crew and an aircraft worth crores. Decisions in the cockpit have real consequences.
- Discipline: procedures, checklists and standard operating procedures are followed every single time, on the hundredth flight as carefully as the first.
- Time management: early report times, night flights, time zones and rosters that change. Rest has to be planned as carefully as the flight.
- Continuous commitment: the learning does not stop at the licence.
Part 7: staying ready for the journey ahead
Is becoming a pilot only about reaching the cockpit, or about staying ready for the journey ahead? In Part 7 the conversation turns to fitness, focus and readiness, the things a pilot has to keep up for an entire career.
What this means in practice
A few realities every aspiring pilot in India should know before starting:
- Medical fitness is ongoing. A DGCA Class 1 medical is needed for a commercial licence, and it has to be renewed regularly throughout a career. Healthy habits are part of the job.
- You are tested again and again. Airline pilots go through recurrent training and regular simulator checks. Passing the CPL exams is the beginning, not the end.
- Rest is regulated. Flight and duty time limits exist because fatigue is a real safety risk. Pilots are responsible for arriving fit to fly.
- Soft skills matter. Communication, teamwork with cabin crew and ATC, and calm decision-making under pressure are as important as handling skills.
Is a flying career right for you?
If the discipline described above excites you rather than scares you, aviation may be your field. And if you love aviation but want a career on the ground, airport operations, airline management, cargo and safety offer equally rewarding paths. Our B.Sc. Aviation, BBA and MBA programs build the foundation for both.
